Mercedes-AMG working on Cayman rivaling sports vehicle

Mercedes-AMG working on Cayman rivaling sports vehicle

Mercedes-AMG could build a baby sports auto to take on the Porsche 718 as well as fill the void of the Mercedes-Benz SLK, which is expected to be phased out after the current generation.

According to Autocar, the new sports vehicle is still in the early stages of development but that Tobias Moers, head of AMG, has been hinting about it since earlier this year. Details about future automotive products are always hard to confirm because - surprise - auto companies don't want to give rivals a heads up at what's coming down the pipe. The upcoming auto will have a mid-engine setup and many of its styling elements will be derived from the Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar.

It could also be available in two bodystyles: a fixed-roof coupe that will compete with the Cayman and an open-top roadster to battle the 718 Boxster, while the pricing will be competitive against Porsche's rival vehicle. One idea is a sports auto that is relatively attainable financially and ideally suited to track day running.

Further solidifying the new Mercedes-AMG car's status as a challenger to the 718 Cayman is its proposed design. A mid-engine layout is now in the discussion, but AMG also hasn't ruled out a more conventional front-engine layout. However, much of the momentum behind the push for this new model is said to come from the growing interest in GT4 racing and the potential beneficial effect for the rest of the AMG line-up in terms of image through motorsport heritage.

The report said that AMG is considering about putting a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine in the still unnamed auto. There will also reportedly be a convertible version that competes with the 718 Boxster. The new model should have similar power to the upcoming A35 and A45 hatchbacks, which are rumored to produce around 300 and 400 horsepower, respectively.

By comparison, today's 718 Cayman is sold with a base turbo 2.0-litre flat four developing 300bhp and a turbo 2.5-litre flat four with 350bhp in standard guise and 365bhp in the existing top-of- the-line Cayman GTS.
