Paul Manafort treated like a 'VIP' in prison, court documents show

Paul Manafort says he's being treated 'like a VIP' in jail

"On the monitored prison phone calls, Manafort has mentioned that he is being treated like a "VIP", the filing stated.

But in the Wednesday filing, special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE argued that Manafort's claims do not hold up because Manafort has said in multiple prison calls that he has had full access to his files and attorneys.

Mueller is now prosecuting Manafort in two separate criminal cases in Virginia and Washington, DC on a dozen criminal charges including tax and bank fraud, conspiracy, lying to investigators, and obstruction of justice.

Ellis insisted this week that the transfer proceed even after Manafort's lawyers, citing concerns about his safety and adjusting to a new jail so close to his trial date, asked that he stay put.

Mr. Manafort is facing trials in Washington and Virginia on tax evasion, bank fraud, lying to investigators and other charges.

Last week, attorneys for Manafort asked the court to delay Manafort's trial, claiming their client's detention at the rural facility put an unfair burden on pretrial preparations and specifically citing the distance - more than 100 miles - from Warsaw to Washington, D.C. Manafort also cited the lengthy commute in waiving his right to appear at pretrial hearings.

"Among the unique privileges Manafort enjoys at the jail are a private, self-contained living unit, which is larger than other inmates' units, his own bathroom and shower facility, his own personal telephone, and his own workspace to prepare for trial", the special counsel wrote. Manafort doesn't have to wear a prison jumpsuit, the filing adds. They have also alleged Mr. Manafort is kept in solitary confinement up to 23 hours a day.

Manafort received three meals a day in his approximately 14x14 foot VIP section cell, which came equipped with a toilet, a shower, a place to sit, a small table, a TV with basic cable, and a phone to make outgoing collect calls. He has not reached out, they said in court filings.

Manafort also argued to have his Virginia trial continued on the grounds that he needed more time to review the many documents in the case, which centers on his work for a Russia-backed political party in Ukraine. Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Manafort told his listener to "think about how it'll play elsewhere". His trial in the District involves federal conspiracy and money-laundering charges and the witness tampering charge.
