But, according to former England midfielder Paul Scholes, Pep Guardiola deserves some credit for the way that the Three Lions have performed in Russian Federation.

'He is definitely [an influence on England],' Scholes said on Bein Sports.

"Especially when you see the way they've got the back three, the way they've got the goalkeeper playing".

"I don't think Gareth [Southgate] has made any secret of that, he's been to see Pep and he's picked his brain".

"For an England fan and an ex-England player, we want to see the best type of football - Spain play the best football, Manchester City past year played the best football".

"As an England fan and a former England player, we want to see the best football possible".

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne thanks Pep Guardiola for helping him to "grow a lot as an individual player" over the past 12 months.

That's not to take anything away from Southgate but rather how the Manchester City boss might have given some ideas to a team that features several of his players.

Scholes, who played for Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, praised Guardiola's example and thinks the Spaniard has helped England progress through the rounds.

It's been refreshing to see an England team being so fearless on the ball, placing emphasis on building up from the goalkeeper and defenders, and ultimately seeing results.

Four of Guardiola's City squad have been called for England at the World and they are playing a great role at England run at the competition.

Guardiola landed the league title and League Cup a year ago, but fell short in the FA Cup and Champions League.

"He's been an innovator". I think that's an impact of his team, with the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi.
