Photographer gets dog-piled as Croatia celebrate winning goal against England

'Croatia are the best team we have faced yet' – Southgate on England's semi-final opponents

In case you've been living under a rock for the last 12 hours, you'll be aware that England's World Cup dream is over after they were beaten 2-1 by Croatian in extra time.

Mario Mandzukic wheels away after scoring the winning goal in Wednesday's semifinal between Croatia and England. Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic rose into the air and with an acrobatic touch off his left foot, drilled the ball into the back of the net.

The country of around 4 million people came to a standstill as Croatians watched the game on screens in squares and cafes.

The Croats will play France for the title on Sunday in its biggest sporting moment since becoming an independent nation in 1991. The sound was eclipsed only by the joy that greeted Mario Mandzukic's extra-time victor and the impromptu fireworks celebration in the wake of the final whistle.

'It's coming home. Impossible, ' the youngster wrote. Harry Kane & Co. will deal with the same disappointment that felled Shearer and Platt, Gazza and Wazza, Beckham and Gerrard. Goals are not the be all and end all given the other attributes he provides, but Sterling himself will want to improve his strike-rate having scored just twice in 43 games for England.

England had got off to a flying start when Trippier curled a superb free kick into the top corner.

Harry Kane ran the Croatia worldwide ragged, twice getting the better of him to set Tottenham up 2-0 within the opening 15 minutes, eventually prompting Reds manager Jurgen Klopp to haul him off.

Winger Ivan Perisic levelled scores on the 67th minute after a great cross from defender Sime Vrsaljko. In the 109th minute, Perisic struck again.

Croatia reached the first World Cup final in their young history on Wednesday, prolonging England's decades of pain as they set up a decider against France with a 2-1 win. The ball popped up and Perisic outjumped Tripper to head the ball behind the defence.

"It felt like England were a little too comfortable with being pushed back", Dickinson, chief sports writer at The Times, said.

Shortly after Ivan Perisic's equaliser and with England firmly on the back foot, Gareth Southgate looked to freshen things up by withdrawing Sterling and sending in Marcus Rashford in the hope that the 20-year-old could expose Lovren and Vida's exhausted legs.

The Three Lions suffered an extra-time 2-1 defeat at the hands of Croatia in Moscow, after a roller-coaster game which saw England take an early lead through Kieran Trippier, only for a second-half equaliser from Ivan Perisic to take the game to extra time and set up Mario Mandzukic's late victor.
