Should the Redskins select CB Sam Beal in the supplemental draft?

Adonis Alexander will join the Redskins’ defensive backfield

The supplemental draft is typically for players who have had troubled pasts.

With the selection of Beal, the Giants will forfeit their third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, leaving them with five total picks. The fact he could doesn't mean he should as he's far closer to a third or fourth round prospect, but desperation and the lack of options might make what is normally a pretty conservative process have teams be more aggressive with Beal.

From a production standpoint, Beal did a good job in the past two seasons making plays on the ball. Josh Gordon, Terrelle Pryor, and Hall of Famer Cris Carter are among the notable supplemental draft picks.

The 49ers in 2019 have their picks in Rounds 1-4 and Round 6. The Giants now have 2019 picks in Rounds 1-6 with their seventh-round selection dependent on punter Riley Dixon's production. They have emphasized the prospects that they have scouted in the NFL Draft. So the Cleveland Browns have the definitive best shot at landing the top pick, but they can not fall out of the first group.

It marked the first time two players were selected in the supplemental draft since 2010. Three of them are defensive backs.

The consensus top prospect on Wednesday is Sam Beal, a cornerback from Western Michigan. The third group has all the teams that did make the playoffs.

Others in the supplemental draft are Mississippi State safety Brandon Bryant, Oregon State linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu and Grand Valley State running back Marty Carter. It's not televised and the order is determined more like the NBA Draft than the normal NFL Draft.

Following the 2018 NFL Draft, the Giants signed Penn State's Grant Haley as an undrafted rookie free agent to pair with veterans such as B.W. Webb, Teddy Williams, and William Gay, who likely very find themselves on the bubble following the pick of Beal. Will the Dolphins take a chance on one of them? That was a shame because it would have been the second selection of that round, number 57 overall. This draft is a way for players to continue their careers in football.

The Browns learned of their draft order shortly before the draft started at 1 p.m.

Beal played well as a junior in 2017, earning All-MAC second-team honors and picked off eventual Jets first-round QB Sam Darnold - whom the Giants passed on - among Beal's two INTs. If multiple teams submit bids, the player goes to the highest bidder, according to a slotted lottery system that breaks up teams into three different groups: non-playoff teams with six or fewer wins, non-playoff teams with more than six wins and playoff teams.

If the Colts believe that roster building is indeed something that happens 12 months a year, Chris Ballard might make a move in the usual quiet month of July. So, he chose to change his plans and enter the supplemental draft. That turn of events angered several other teams and directly led to a change in the way the Supplemental Draft is conducted.
