Surface Go shipping August 2 with top-spec device priced at $549

Microsoft Surface lineup

Microsoft officials have said previously that backward compatibility is key to its Surface strategy.

It's unclear, however, just how well the Surface Go will perform in that latter role, particularly the lower-end model, which uses embedded Multimedia Card (eMMC) storage instead of solid state storage. The Surface Pro meanwhile has a 12.3-inch screen with a 2736x1824 resolution.

The 10-inch PixelSense display features a 3:2 aspect ratio and an 1800 x 1200 resolution.

The company is offering a new Surface Mobile Mouse that is also up for preorder and comes in at £29.99. Among the 13.5-inch laptop's most distinguishing features is a keyboard wrapped in Alcantara, a suede-like synthetic fabric from Italy used in some luxury vehicle interiors. The base spec version features 4GB of RAM and a 64GB eMMC drive and costs $399 while the other version now available has 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive and that will go for $549. In terms of connectivity, the device supports WiFi connectivity (802.11 a/b/g/n/a) and an LTE-compatible version is in the works. Microsoft says that you can expect 9 hours of battery life in the Surface Go, which isn't bad but isn't the best.

To those familiar with Surface design, the Go looks like a smaller version of the Surface Pro 3 that has been around since 2014, but with slightly more rounded corners, and now also comes with a USB-C port for the first time. For comparison's sake, the Surface Pro now retails for $799.

Microsoft confirmed the new device will go on sale in the United Kingdom on August 2. Alongside of other accessories, it seems that Microsoft will be making a dongle for this as well. Microsoft is accepting preorders in select markets, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and other part of Europe, with an August 2 ship date. There's also a Surface Pen for $99 that artists and students can purchase for doodling and note-taking purposes.
