Trump blasts Germany at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit over gas pipeline deal with Russian Federation

NATO Ambassador Kay Bailey Hutchison said last week that now 16 of 29 countries are on track to meet that goal.

"We are protecting Germany, we are protecting France, we are protecting all of these countries and then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russian Federation where they are paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russian Federation".

Of Nato's 29 members, just five meet that target this year: the US, Greece, Estonia, the United Kingdom and Latvia.

Pelosi and Schumer even implied that President Trump's loyalty was to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

"President Trump has a very direct language and message on defence spending, but fundamentally we all agree that we need fair burden sharing", Stoltenberg said on his arrival at the summit. The United States pays about 67 percent of its gross domestic product on defense, more than any other nation, although only 3.5 percent is NATO-related.

The American declared it "inappropriate" in a fiery breakfast meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

"This has gone on for many presidents".

The U.S. president has lambasted U.S. allies for routinely failing to meet a 2 percent goal, a much lower standard that their nations agreed upon before he took office. "His behavior this morning is another profoundly disturbing signal that the President is more loyal to President Putin than to our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies".

Germany indeed devotes only about 1.25 percent of its GDP to defense. "And I think we have to talk to Germany about it". Trump said he had a "very, very good relationship" with Merkel who described the two as "good partners".

The president and his fellow critics argue that if America does less, others will do more - that its largess facilitates free riders. On 17 May, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump is demanding that Germany drop Nord Stream 2 as one of the conditions for a trade deal with Europe that would not include high tariffs on steel and aluminium. His comment that Germany was controlled by Russian Federation earned a rebuke from Berlin.

Trump fired back: "How can you be together when a country is getting its energy from the person you want protection against or from the group that you want protection against?"

Trump's comment that "Germany is totally controlled by Russia because they are getting 60 to 70 percent of their energy from Russia and a new pipeline" appeared to misstate German energy use - about 20 percent of which is accounted for by oil and gas imports from Russia. "We're protecting everybody", he said. "If we look at the gas pipeline, Germany is an independent country".

He's talking about increasing defense spending because he sees that is something that really plays to the idea that he's keeping a campaign promise.

Again and again, Trump has pushed the idea that allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization owe the U.S. money.
