TRUMP TAKES EUROPE: The President Says Germany 'A CAPTIVE' of Russian Federation

Trump emerged declaring his continued commitment to a Western alliance built on USA military might that has stood up to Moscow since World War Two.

Mr Trump said he told counterparts on Wednesday that he was "extremely unhappy" with the lack of progress being made towards meeting the alliance target of spending 2% of GDP on defence.

Mr Trump has been pressing member countries to spend more on defence, accusing them of passing the burden on to the US.

"A clear message from President Trump is having an impact".

Donald Trump claimed a personal victory at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit on Thursday after telling European allies to increase spending or lose Washington's support, an ultimatum that forced leaders to huddle in a crisis session with the US president. And the United States is being treated much more fairly.

Instead, a series of events - a black-tie dinner with business leaders, a meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May and an audience with Queen Elizabeth II - will happen outside the bustling city, where Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in a verbal battle with Trump.

Says Trump: "I think meeting with people is great".

"The numbers have gone up like a rocket ship. and they're going to be going up further", he said.

Most officials and the invited leaders of non-NATO Afghanistan and Georgia were ushered out.

Asked when exactly the allies would now reach their two percent of GDP target, Trump said it would be over the coming years. He said the allies had confirmed their intention to meet the goal of 2 per cent by 2024 and no more.

Macron and others said they did not interpret Trump's words as a direct threat to quit the alliance Washington founded in 1949 to contain Soviet expansion.

Trump had taken an aggressive tone during the summit, questioning the value of an alliance that has defined decades of American foreign policy, torching an ally and proposing a massive increase in European defence spending.

Kerry questioned why Trump was rebuking our allies publicly while turning Russian Federation, "who has been attacking America's democracy, into his fawned-over ally".

President Trump publicly criticized Germany over its Baltic Sea gas pipeline deal with Russian Federation, calling the wealthiest nation in the European Union "a captive to Russian Federation". The U.S.is paying for Europe's protection, then loses billions on Trade. He also said he thought spending of 4% on defence - similar to the US level - would be the right level.

Still, Trump has been more conciliatory behind the scenes, including at a leaders' dinner Wednesday.
