United States president Donald Trump visits UK, in pictures

Mr Trump is coming direct from Brussels, where he was one of the main protagonists of the two-day North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

In the weeks before the American president's inauguration, May sent Trump a copy of the text of Churchill's 1941 Christmas Eve radio address to Americans, delivered while the prime minister was staying with U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Trump also said he is going to "a pretty hot spot" right now, pointing to the string of resignations from Prime Minister's Theresa May's government.

May's future was thrown into question after two high-level cabinet members -including Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson- resigned amid the growing chaos surrounding Brexit negotiations.

"The people voted to break it up, so I imagine that's what they'll do".

Trump has always been a Brexit supporter and has expressed enthusiasm for a wide-ranging trade deal with Britain after Brexit, something heralded by eurosceptics as being one of the great benefits of exiting the bloc.

The Stop Trump Coalition accused the president of being "too scared to face protestors".

Churchill spent three weeks at the White House, cementing his close ties with Roosevelt and forming the basis for future relations between the US and Great Britain.

President Donald Trump and First lady, Melania, on Thursday arrived the Stansted Airport in the United Kingdom for his first official visit since becoming US President.

But the red carpet treatment is likely to be overshadowed by massive protests planned by Britons opposed to Trump's presence. A YouGov poll on Wednesday showed 77 percent had an unfavorable opinion of the president and just 50 percent thought his visit should go ahead.

"You know I've been reading a lot on Brexit over the last couple of days and its seems to be turning a little bit differently where they're getting at least partially involved back with the European Union", he said.

"I get along with her very well, I have very good relations".

Meanwhile, in the capital city thousands will gather in a various of protests to voice their views against the United States president, including a march that could be attended by as many as 50,000 people and a flying protest involving the "Baby Trump" balloon.

Mr Trump will instead be ensconced at Windsor Castle, west of London on Friday when a blimp tethered next to the Houses of Parliament.

The largest demonstration is expected in central London on Friday where a giant "Trump baby" balloon will fly close to Parliament after being given the go-ahead by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

Russia, Brexit and the Middle East are set to top the agenda. His late mother hailed from Scotland, and he owns two luxury golf courses there.
