Australian Handmaid's Tale star Yvonne Strahovski lands Emmy nomination

David Harbour Stranger Things

FX's true crime dramatization "The Assassination of Gianni Versace" led the limited series category with 18 nominations, including a best actor nod for Darren Criss who plays the killer of the gay Italian fashion designer.

Markle's name was submitted for "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series" for her role as Rachel Zane on "Suits", but the newly-minted royal wasn't nominated.

Seriously, what does Lauren Graham have to do to earn an Emmy nomination?

The show about noble families vying for the Iron Throne faces tough competition from perennial favorite comedy sketch show "Saturday Night Live" and HBO stablemate "Westworld" with 21 nominations each.

The series scored key nods in categories including drama series, lead actress in a drama (Elisabeth Moss), supporting actress in a drama (Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski), supporting actor in a drama (Joseph Fiennes), guest actress in a drama (Kelly Jenrette, Cherry Jones, Samira Wiley), drama series directing (Kari Skogland), and drama series writing (Bruce Miller).

"Game of Thrones" was out of the running in 2017 because the show aired later than usual.

Other Australians who missed out on nominations included Portia de Rossi (Arrested Development), Hugo Weaving (Patrick Melrose), Elizabeth Debicki (The Tale) and Jim Jefferies (The Jim Jefferies Show).

Also among the nominations: singer John Legend is up for lead actor in a miniseries or movie for his work in "Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert".

The nominees for best drama series were The Handmaid's Tale; Game of Thrones; This Is Us; The Crown; The Americans; Stranger Things; and Westworld.

And HBO's "Barry" made a significant mark on the comedy voting, where Donald Glover's "Atlanta" led the way, in a field thrown wide open by the absence of three-time champ "Veep" from this year's list of contenders. It's a steep fall-off from there, although 13 networks or services garnered 10 or more nominations, reflecting the breadth of competition that now characterizes the Emmy race in the age of "peak TV".
