BriefIsrael set to land spacecraft on the moon in early 2019

SpaceIL

An Israeli organization announced plans Tuesday to launch the country's first spacecraft to the moon in December, with hopes of burnishing Israel's reputation as a small nation with otherworldly high-tech ambitions.

"Ship, having the form of a round table on the four pillars of carbon fiber, will be launched in December aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida", - stated in the message. Fuel will comprise 75 percent of its weight, which will be 180 kilograms on landing, less than any previous craft that landed on the moon, the company said.

Help us grow and continue telling Israel's story to the world. SpaceIL CEO Anteby said that the organisation will put the Israeli flag on the Moon. "It will be in contact with ground stations all over the world; we'll be in radio contact with it throughout its trip".

Since SpaceIL's establishment, the mission of landing an Israeli spacecraft on the moon has become a national project embodying educational values, funded by donors such as Dr. Miriam and Mr. Sheldon Adelson, Mr. Sammy Sagol, Mrs. Lynn Schusterman, Mr. Steven Grand and others.

SpaceIL and the state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries plan to launch their unmanned craft in December, the team said at a press conference at an IAI facility outside Tel Aviv. In the event, they reached the finals, but at the end there was no victor as none had met the requirements and deadline in time - but they chose to "go for it" anyway.

Three young Israeli scientists, Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari and Yonatan Winetraub, made a decision to join the fray. Also, this Israeli mission to the Moon is an extraordinary event for Israel and, mainly, for the Israelian science community.

A successful mission would be a significant achievement, giving scientists a relatively low-priced spacecraft for future experiments, said Tal Inbar, head of the Space & UAV Research Center at The Fisher Institute for Air and Space Strategic Studies in Herzilya, Israel.

This Israeli spacecraft is expected to land on the moon in early 2019.

"We are making history, and when we do that, we will be very proud, and that is the pride that we need in the country". "In the coming months the spacecraft will undergo a series of intensive checks and tests at IAI, to prove that it will withstand the launch, flight and landing conditions".

"What we're doing is we're trying to replicate the Apollo effect in the United States", Kahn told reporters, referring to the surge in interest in science and engineering after the USA space program landed on the moon in 1969.
