Celebrities lose followers amid crackdown — Fake Twitter users

Why President Trump Just Lost Over 100,000 Twitter Followers

By cracking down on fake accounts, Twitter hopes to restore faith in the controversy-ridden platform where influence-from entertainment to politics-can be inflated by automated or fake followers, the New York Times reports.

Also, the accounts that Twitter would be purging are locked accounts that the company "detected sudden changes in account behaviour", and the owners didn't validate their accounts.

President Donald Trump's yuge Twitter following has taken a whack. In a major crackdown conducted today, Twitter has lashed out all the bots and fake followers who have been misusing Twitter so far. Twitter's policy change could upset the latter.

Social media giant says it will start shutting down suspicious accounts it has locked.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey ended up watching his number of followers drop around 200,000 thanks to the purge.

However, Twitter's primary account itself appears to be the biggest loser, Variety reported, losing 7.5 million fake accounts - or 12 percent - from 62.85 million earlier Thursday to 55.35 million by mid-afternoon.

By comparison, the decline of other large accounts has been smaller.

Christian who goes by the username XtianDela lost over 500,000 followers which led him to a drop from over 1 million followers while Nyakundi lost over 400,000.

By contrast, former President Barack Obama's count fell by 2.1 million followers, or 2.1 percent, to 101.5 million.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi, among others on Friday lost thousands of Twitter followers after the micro-blogging site deleted several suspicious and inactive accounts.

Katy Perry, now the most-followed person on Twitter, had more than 109 million followers on Wednesday - a number that plunged to about 108 million on Thursday afternoon. "We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency will make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation".

Twitter is now clamping down on problem accounts, including all locked accounts.
