Embattled FBI Agent Peter Strzok Defiantly Defends Himself at Heated House Hearing

FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok testifies before the House Committees on the Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform during a hearing

And yet some analysts couldn't help but notice a hint of irony in Republicans' argument that Strzok's personal views must have influenced his official duty, while they simultaneously conduct investigations into politicians they openly support or oppose.

The interview will also be transcribed, too, according to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte, R-Ohio.

When Strzok declined to answer some questions on the Russian Federation probe, Goodlatte suggested Republicans might recess the hearing and hold him in contempt. Democrats objected and Goodlatte eventually let the hearing proceed. Gohmert took the questioning to a whole new level in pointing out that Strzok was having an extramarital affair with Page.

Former FBI Assistant Director James Kallstrom told FOX Business that the "lies" perpetrated by FBI agent Peter Strzok are consistent with the lack of leadership exemplified by the agency's former director, James Comey.

"Mr. Chairman, there's no basis for that", protested the top Judiciary Democrat, Rep.

Paul Callan is a CNN legal analyst, a former NY homicide prosecutor and current counsel at the NY law firm of Edelman & Edelman PC, focusing on wrongful conviction and civil rights cases.

"And the chairman is not being proper", Nadler shot back.

Strzok expressed little regret for the most controversial text exchange with Page.

Page, who worked for Andrew McCabe when he was Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director and briefly served on special counsel Robert Mueller III's team, "was part of the mess that we've uncovered over at DOJ", Ryan said.

"Mr. Strzok, are you starting to understand why some folks out there don't believe a word you say?" said Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Texas.

Strzok replied that he was not under subpoena, but testifying voluntarily - and that he could not answer questions "related to the ongoing investigations being undertaken by the special counsel's office".

Strzok tried to respond, but Gohmert cut him off, insisting that he was not allowed to answer due to hearing rules that the witness could only respond if a representative asked a direct question.

Strzok insisted under aggressive questioning that a much-discussed August 2016 text in which he said "we'll stop" a Trump presidency followed Trump's denigration of the family of a dead USA service member. He said the late-night, off-the-cuff text reflected his belief that Americans would not stomach such "horrible, disgusting behavior" by the presidential candidate.

"Let me be clear, unequivocally and under oath: Not once in my 26 years of defending my nation did my personal opinions impact any official action I took", Strzok told the committees.

Page had been subpoenaed to appear on Capitol Hill on Thursday, but did not comply with the order because Congress hadn't given her "sufficient time to prepare". Her attorney confirmed to CNN she will be interviewed on Friday and she did not appear at Thursday's public hearing.

Republicans yelled at Strzok and pointed fingers at him, making it clear they did not believe him.

Strzok, who has already spoken to the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees behind closed doors, is expected to testify publicly before the panels Thursday.

House Democrats accused Republicans of using Strzok to undermine special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's investigation.
