FDA: Retailers can not legally sell Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal following recall

CDC says avoid this cereal after it was linked to salmonella

"Laboratory testing identified the outbreak strain of Salmonella in unopened and opened boxes of Honey Smacks cereal collected from retail locations and from ill people's homes", the new report stated.

Health officials said people get sick from Salmonella 12 to 72 hours after ingesting the germ, and experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. The first cases of illness in this outbreak began with symptoms on March 3, and the most recent individuals began feeling ill on July 2. More than 100 people have become sick and 30 were hospitalized. Earlier this year, 210 people were infected by an E. coli outbreak that killed five people linked to romaine lettuce that had been grown in Arizona. Death is rare but may occur if the person is not treated quickly with antibiotics. No deaths have been reported, the CDC said.

California has six cases listed as of Thursday, according to the disease control and prevention website. The agency says it found salmonella in samples of Honey Smacks, which has been subject to a voluntary recall by Kellogg since mid-June. Though the recall covers cereal with a best-by date of June 14, 2018, through June 14, 2019, the agency is recommending people avoid the cereal altogether. "Retailers can not legally offer the cereal for sale and consumers should not purchase Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal".

If you see Honey Smacks being sold at a store, you are asked to call the FDA consumer complaint coordinator in your area.
