Iran Supreme Leader's Advisor Hails 'Strategic' Ties With Russia Before Putin Talks

Upon his arrival in Moscow, Velayati said Iran and Russian Federation enjoy strategic and long-term relations which have generated fruitful results over the past few years.

A senior advisor to Iran's Leader is in Moscow to hold talks with top Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin.

Velayati further quoted Putin as saying that "we don't accept the sanctions imposed by the United States and others against Iran".

Touching upon nuclear cooperation, Velayati said that a 1000-MW reactor have been established in Iran with the help of Russian Federation and two other reactors are under construction.

According to The New Yorker, Israel has joined forces with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and suggested to Trump that the USA should offer to cancel the sanctions it imposed on Russia four years ago, following Russia's annexation of the Crimea, in exchange for Russian action to remove Iranian forces from Syria. "Only a strategic and long-term relationship (with Russia) can continue this cooperation", said Velayati, who was also due to meet Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak in Moscow.

Qassemi told the IRIB that Velayati will also pay a visit to China to convey messages from Ayatollah Khamenei and Rouhani to Chinese leaders.

The Kremlin also said in a statement that Putin and Velayati exchanged views on bilateral Tehran-Moscow relations and the developments in the Middle East, including the Syria crisis.

A US State Department official said this month that Washington's goal was to get as many countries as possible down to zero Iranian oil imports. However, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday the United States might consider requests from some countries to be exempted from sanctions.

Velayati is among special envoys that Iran is sending to various countries in response to the USA withdrawal earlier this year from the 2015 nuclear deal.

He added that the cooperation in the region between the resistance front led by Iran and Russian Federation against terrorism and its supporters in Syria and other regional countries was indicative of an exemplary, strategic and long-term partnership between the two countries. Israel is concerned that Iran is establishing a military presence in neighbouring Syria and it has attacked Iranian targets there.

Velayati reaffirmed Iran's firm intention to maintain its presence in Syria, but skirted a question about a possible pullback from the border, saying only that Tehran won't bow to US and Israeli coercion.
