Jared Kushner still lacks high-level security clearance

Jared Kushner, the son-in-law and top adviser to President Trump, reportedly does not have a security clearance to view the nation's most closely guarded secrets.

Jared Kushner lacks the security clearance level required to review some of the government's most sensitive secrets, according to two people familiar with his access.

The block means Kushner can not see some parts of the President's Daily Brief, a highly classified summary of world events, the Post reported.

Limits on Kushner's access to the intelligence could be an impediment to his ability to manage his portfolio for the president, including developing a Middle East peace plan and meeting with foreign officials.

Experts told The Post that a lower level security clearance could prevent Kushner from completing parts of his job.

It is not clear what factors led to the delay in his receiving his permanent clearance in May, but the Post noted that the White House has the power to grant "top secret" access internally, without requiring the usual background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the special Central Intelligence Agency approval required for SCI access.

That led to a White House policy overhaul in February that significantly downgraded access to sensitive information for Kushner and other Trump administration officials on interim clearances.

Kushner's attorney Abbe Lowell said in May that Kushner received his clearance in the usual way and that he had access to the information he needed to carry out his responsibilities. In extreme cases, the president can override things and say 'I want him here for this meeting.' " As president, Trump has the authority to declassify information.

Lowell, Kushner's attorney, has maintained that the official has fully cooperated with Mueller's probe.

Still, questions were raised over Kushner's involvement in special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's probe and if the investigation was holding up his background checks. Kushner may have received his clearance that way. Kushner was boosted up to his current designation in May. But that clearance was only for information classified as "top secret", the Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing two unnamed officials.

The move came as The Post reported that officials in China, Israel, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates had privately discussed ways they believed they could manipulate Kushner by taking advantage of his complex business arrangements, financial difficulties and lack of foreign policy experience, according to current and former US officials familiar with intelligence reports on the matter.

"I could go play softball without my glove, but I would be hampered and not performing my best as an outfielder", Zaid said, adding that trying to negotiate Middle East peace would be extremely hard.
