Joaquin Phoenix Is Frightened By The Role Of The Joker

Joaquin Phoenix Joker Movie Actor Says New Project Scares Him

Now that it's been confirmed that Joaquin Phoenix has finalized his deal to star in a Joker origin movie, its high time that someone gets inside the actor's head and starts asking some very poignant questions about the project. While Jared Leto's Joker, who first appeared in Suicide Squad back in 2016, will continue to frolic around the DCEU's massive superhero epics, this film is expected to be more of a crime drama produced with a budget of around $55 million. Phoenix recently spoke with Collider and talked about his feelings on the role. "So, in some ways, the process, which is obviously reading a script and meeting a filmmaker and then continuing to have meetings and discussions with Todd [Phillips]". And so there is something very appealing about that and working with him on this particular project. For more detail, you can check out the actor's full comments over at Collider. "I wouldn't quite classify this as any genre", he said. It feels unique, and I think more then anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that's exciting. He finds Phillips' want to dive into the "real life struggles" of comic characters that is often left unexposed in the film, and that he always felt these comic characters deserved to be studied and that Phillips finds this idea "appealing".

Ironically, he also discussed how he thought the Joker would not be the right character for this concept, as this character study has been done before for the popular villain and it wouldn't be right to revisit it. Phoenix also described his feelings on the expectations coming from the role, saying he always feels anxiety when he takes on a role from a writer/director for fear he might not have met their expectations.

"So I was trying to think of other characters, and he said 'I'll set up a general meeting with Warner Bros.' And I said 'I'm not gonna go, I can't go to a general meeting, '" Phoenix continued.

If you're just finding out about this Joker movie, it's not part of the established DC Extended Universe, but will instead offer a unique spin on the comic's character in a one-off feature. Phoenix wanted to make a low budget character study about a superhero villain.

"I thought, "You can't do the Joker, because, you know, it's just you can't do that character, it's just been done, '" he says".

Should the Phoenix Joker do well, it'll certainly spark a whole shift in how WB/DC - and maybe even the other studios - approach the voluminous libraries of comic book characters that they have access to. And I said I'm not gonna go, I can't go to a general meeting. "I felt like you could get something on screen". It will be very interesting to see what Phoenix brings to the role that has been done a few times before, leaving some pretty big shoes to fill.
