LGBT Activists Display "Hidden Flag" At World Cup

For the "Hidden Flag" project, a joint effort by the Spanish digital agency LOLA Mullenlowe and FELGTB, Spain's largest LGBTQ organization, the group donned jerseys from Spain (red), the Netherlands (orange), Brazil (yellow), Mexico (green), Argentina (blue) and Colombia (purple) to form a flag hidden in plain sight in solidarity with "a call to love".

People have been applauding the act of protest on Twitter.

Six activists stand to represent the LGTBQ rights flag in Russian Federation. The activists ― who have been identified as Marta Márquez, Eric Houter, Eloi Pierozan Junior, Guillermo León, Vanesa Paola Ferrario, and Mateo Fernández Gómez ― have had their photo snapped at iconic sites around Moscow, and even posed next to a police officer. In 1993, same-sex unions were decriminalised and later in 2013; the nation passed a ban on promotion of homosexuality to minors leading to banning gay pride events or even discussions of gay rights in public spaces.

The law came under worldwide scrutiny in 2014 in the wake of concerns over how it would affect athletes and spectators at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. So, to protest against Russia's anti-gay policies, six activists during the 2018 FIFA World Cup stood together and formed a "hidden rainbow flag" and walked defiantly around Moscow. In defiance of a national law that prohibits disseminating material that promotes the community, six activists wore soccer jerseys, in the colors of the LGBT rainbow flag, to promote their cause. The group of six made the decision to display their makeshift "flag" because they say homosexuality has been "persecuted, sometimes even by jail sentences" in Russian Federation, according to RadioFreeEurope.

Photos of the group have been shared across social media. Even Chelsea Clinton weighed in on Twitter, calling the project "courageous & handsome".
