May's Government in chaos as Johnson and Davis quit over Brexit plan

The former Brexit secretary David Davis quit the Cabinet over a plan brokered by Theresa May for leaving the European Union

A rebellion by Eurosceptic backbenchers could wipe out Mrs May's majority when the Bill returns to the Commons on Monday, in what would be the first significant test of strength for her Brexit critics.

"What I found when I was talking to people on Saturday, I was out canvassing on Saturday, people like the fact that we are delivering on what they voted for".

But prominent Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg described it as a "breakdown in trust" and said Mrs May must now U-turn or be forced to rely on Labour votes to get her legislation through Parliament. Britain is due to leave the European Union in March.

A second - reportedly backed by the DUP - would force the British government to commit itself in law not to allow a customs border down the Irish Sea.

The Prime Minister flew to Berlin last Thursday, on the eve of her Chequers summit, to hold a meeting with Mrs Merkel.

"I believe this will help the government stick to the promises it made". The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work.

European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas says Monday that "we will continue to negotiate in good will, bona fide, with Prime Minister Theresa May and the United Kingdom government negotiators in order to reach a deal".

'The Chequers deal is a plan that has been put together, it's been agreed by government, ' she said as she arrived in Brussels for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

The Chequers policy, which secured Cabinet agreement last week before sparking senior resignations, includes being tied to the European single market for goods under a "common rule book" and close customs arrangements as part of a new UK-EU free trade area.

"We deliver that Brexit and we do it in a way that protects jobs and livelihoods and meets our commitment to Northern Ireland".

He added that he supported the resignations of Mr Davis and Mr Johnson, and said the Tories were telling businesses that "the rules that have burdened you for year are not going to go anywhere". This would be unleashed if at least 48 Conservative MPs ask for a letter from Graham Brady, Chairman of Committee 1922, body representing Tory deputies without charge in government.

The UK is set to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019, more than two and half years after the public voted by a margin of 51.9% to 48.1% for Brexit, in a referendum.

But leading Eurosceptic Bernard Jenkin played down the prospects of more walkouts from the administration.

"For the record. ERG is not expecting any further resignations, nor were we expecting any in the first place", said Mr Jenkin. We need to rise to the challenge and grasp the opportunities'. "We are supporting Theresa for PM".

He says "there is now a new secretary of state and we look forward to moving on".

The rebels do not have much less guarantee that y would win motion, as most members of party are supporters of a soft Brexit and many consider it madness to risk a crisis that could end up opening doors of Downing Street to Labour Jeremy Corbyn.
