President Trump loses 300K followers in Twitter purge

Trump has done more damage to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in months than Russian Federation has in decades Trump takes credit for increased defense spending by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, but says "it isn't almost enough" Trump questions how Russian Federation probe can "proceed" given Federal Bureau of Investigation agent's private comments MORE, who had 53.4 million Twitter followers before the platform began pulling accounts from follower lists this week, had 53.1 million followers as of Thursday afternoon.

Katy Perry, the most-followed user on Twitter, and Lady Gaga lost about 2.5 million followers.

Twitter is now clamping down on problem accounts, including all locked accounts. Twitter on Thursday kicked off its latest effort to rid the platform of fake or frozen accounts.

The change in follower counts doesn't affect the active user totals Twitter tracks and reports on a quarterly basis to investors, according to the company.

Since Twitter announced that it would be working to reduce questionable accounts, President Trump has lost about 100,000 of his 53.4 million followers, while former president Barack Obama is down nearly 400,000 of his 104 million followers as of Wednesday, according to a report from Washington Post. Dorsey tweeted that he saw 200,000 of his own followers vanish. Twitter said that most users will see a drop of "four followers or fewer". Some celebrities lost the equivalent of a city's or even a small nation's worth of followers in mere minutes.

By contrast, former President Barack Obama's count fell by 2.1 million followers, or 2.1 percent, to 101.5 million. He's got over 4 million followers as of Thursday.

Dorsey said earlier this year in an interview with Harrison Barnes that the change he'd make if he were starting Twitter today is to put less emphasis on follower count.

"This specific update is focused on followers because it is one of the most visible features on our service and often associated with account credibility", Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's legal, policy, and trust and safety lead, wrote in a blog post.
