The 42-year-old, who now lives in Los Angeles, is in an induced coma after he failed to respond to treatment for a suspected case of pneumonia.

He captioned the post: "Thank God I got ill in Britain (actually on the way to Britain, was taken off the plane in a wheelchair)".

The BBC has since reported that his sister, Juliet, has claimed that Richard's condition worsened to the point he has been placed in a medically-induced coma, and has undergone a tracheotomy to help him breathe.

Now a source close to Richard has told The Sun: 'It's touch and go, and extremely upsetting for everyone who loves him.

He captioned the post: "I'm A&E (in Lewisham) on the NHS's 70th birthday".

Again, praising the NHS, he noted: "Fuck all the ideology driven politicians who've messed up America's healthcare system".

Richard informed his fans at the time: 'Looks like l've got pneumonia. I hate to miss a party'. Although I thought that was for people in their 80s", he wrote, also adding: "Basically pneumonia.

Richard Bacon started his career on BBC Radio Nottingham before going on to present on national television and radio including The Big Breakfast, Top of the Pops, BBC Radio 5 live and BBC 6 Music. "Viva the NHS. Happy 70th", he captioned the snap which showed him in a hospital bed. Doctors had earlier misdiagnosed him with pneumonia.

He said the treatment has allowed him to sleep and cut down his drinking to twice a week and in significantly lesser amounts.

Away from work, Richard is a doting dad to two children - son Arthur, six, and daughter Ivy, four, - with his wife Rebecca McFarlane.
