Sandra Oh Makes History with Emmy Nomination! | 2018 Emmy Awards, Sandra Oh

The star of breakout hit "Killing Eve" became the first Asian actress to be nominated for a leading role Emmy in either comedy or drama.

At a time when Hollywood is reckoning with calls for greater inclusivity, the historic aspect of Oh's nomination serves as another sobering reminder of the industry's deep-rooted diversity problem.

This isn't the first time the actress has been nominated for an Emmy.

"I feel tremendous gratitude and joy with this nomination", Oh told press in a statement Thursday. I am thrilled for [creator] Phoebe Waller-Bridge's nomination and for the entire cast/crew of Killing Eve.

"P.S. I think my mother at this moment may actually be satisfied", the 46-year-old actress added.

"Killing Eve" is Oh's big comeback after leaving "Grey's Anatomy" in 2014.

Oh's nomination spurred fans to celebrate online, with several hoping that this nomination might lead to a win she "deserved" for "Grey's Anatomy", after her decade-long run as Dr. Cristina Yang on the ABC drama. "The best way possible that I know how is to find the most interesting material and to do my best work for it. It's too important to not care about it or to not try and be out of the box in some sort of way". Hopefully my community can feel like they have representation as well...

If Oh wins, she'd be only the third actor of Asian descent ever to win an acting Emmy, and both previous wins have come in recent years: Archie Panjabi won in 2010 for her supporting role on The Good Wife, and Riz Ahmed won last year for his lead role in the HBO miniseries The Night Of.

We'll learn if she wins when the 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by "SNL's" Colin Jost and Michael Che, air live September 17 on NBC at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
