Thailand cave rescue Brit diver says: 'We are not heroes'

The boys were taken to a hospital in Chiang Rai where they are recovering from their ordeal

"We will sing a song for him", she said. Their bikes were found near the entrance of the cave and footprints suggested that they had been forced deeper into the maze of tunnels when monsoon rains began to fall.

The rescue sparked jubilation with Thais heaping praise on the rescue team of foreign and local divers as the triumphant tagline "Hooyah" pinballed across social media. The boys are expected to be released within seven days barring complications.

At least two Hollywood producers are already plotting a movie project about the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach in anticipation of global box office success.

John Volanthen was the first voice the boys heard after nine days trapped in the underground network in Chiang Rai province.

Doctors, divers and other rescuers were posted along the twisting corridors monitoring the boys as they were passed through using a system of ropes, pulleys and rubber piping.

The parents have reportedly only been able to see their children through windows as they recover.

Doctors have put the 12 boys, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old football coach in quarantine while they are being tested for infectious diseases they may have contracted inside the Tham Luang cave complex.

At around 10 p.m., Volanthen emerged from the waters around the mound and shone a torch into the startled eyes of the boys. The navy has a motto: 'We don't abandon the people'.

Ropes were used inside the cave as gushing water made the escape even more risky for the Thai boys.

But Mr Volanthen credited the worldwide team of military, navy and civilian divers who all "pulled together".

Brown was impressed by the rigour of the planning by the Thai military. "I've never seen anything that's so precise or to the point", he said.

A Thai navy SEAL diver told AFP news agency the boys were sleeping or partially conscious as they were carried out of the cave. He was the only casualty of the operation.

Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong, a health department inspector, earlier told reporters one from the last group rescued on Tuesday had a lung infection and they were all given vaccinations for rabies and tetanus.

In the video, one of the boys flashed a "victory" hand gesture. When divers reached them later, they brought additional food, water and blankets.

"The main challenge in the mission is water, which keeps coming all the time".

"You are very strong", Volanthen told the group.

The most promising offer so far has come from Ivanhoe Pictures, which is in negotiations with the Thai navy and government to make a film about the events.

The most unsafe part of the journey out of the labyrinthine cave system was the first kilometer, during which they were required to squeeze through a narrow flooded channel. "They are children being children, it was an accident", Narongsak said.

"Some of them were asleep, some of them were wiggling their fingers".
