Trump gears up for meeting with "competitor" Putin after rocky North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit

Trump, in a series of tweets from Brussels, said that, "Presidents have been trying unsuccessfully for years to get Germany and other rich NATO Nations to pay more toward their protection from Russian Federation".

This gives Putin, who invaded the Ukrainian territory of Crimea in early 2014 without major reaction from the West, even more leeway to shape the global balance of power despite its relative economic weakness versus major adversaries like China and the United States.

Trump suggests he forced a great shift in the space of the past two days.

U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. First Lady Melania Trump attend the evening reception and dinner at the 2018 NATO Summit. Both sides accuse one another of violating the treaty.

"Dear @realDonaldTrump. US doesn't have and won't have a better ally than EU".

Trump, who went into this week's summit trailing grievances about the USA having spent decades taking up the slack for penny-pinching allies, came out of it singing NATO's praises with his usual outsized flair, calling it a "finely tuned machine" that's now "richer than it ever was".

The U.S. share of that is capped at 22 per cent.

"Since President Trump was in Brussels last spring allies have added 41 billion extra for defence spending".

"I'm sorry, they're for White House staff", they were told as they tried to grab vacant seats at the front.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro will lead a high-level team attending the Farnborough Airshow outside London next week to advocate on behalf of U.S. aerospace and defence companies.

Trump's campaign and transition team have been accused of colluding with Russian agents in an effort to influence the 2016 USA election against Hillary Clinton.

Currently, all leaders were in a "confused state" because everyone was wondering what the condition for the four per cent meant, and the extent to which Trump was serious, Radev said.

Mr. Trump has also been harshly critical of German Chanceller Angela Merkel, tweeting in June that "the people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration is rocking the already tenuous Berlin coalition". "There is a communique that was published yesterday. It's very detailed", Macron said, according to the Associated Press. "It confirms the goal of 2 percent by 2024".

With allies fearing he could strike some sort of deal with Nato's key adversary, Trump said that he saw Putin as a "competitor" but not an "enemy".

"We're supposed to be guarding against Russia, and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia", Trump said in the presence of reporters. He's been very, very nice to me and very supportive. "I'm a very stable genius".

Trump poured fuel on the Brexit fire just hours before he was due to land there, saying he was not sure that Britons had voted for the Brexit plan presented by Prime Minister Theresa May, which has triggered a British cabinet rebellion. Trump's is scheduled to meet with Putin in Helsinki on Monday.

The U.S. Embassy has warned Americans to be careful in London during Trump's visit, recommending that they "exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings that may become violent", "keep a low profile" and "be aware of your surroundings".

Others, such as University of Ottawa professor Roland Paris, who previously served as Trudeau's foreign policy adviser, were left unimpressed with Trump's approach, saying it could pose a danger to the alliance, whose very strength rests on unity.

Trump's trip to Britain will test the bonds of the U.S. and U.K.'s special relationship.

Trump has said next week's meeting with Putin "may be the easiest" part of his European tour.
