Trump rattles North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, knocking its value and assailing Germany

US first lady welcomed in Belgium with music and fashion

Before arriving a half hour late to the final day of meetings on Thursday, Trump tweeted that "the US pays tens of Billions of Dollars too much to subsidize Europe", that Germany's oil and gas pipeline with Russian Federation is "not acceptable", and that allies must not only all reach the 2 percent defense spending guideline, but double that to 4 percent.

White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders confirmed the ask to reporters on Wednesday, saying that the president "wants to see our allies share more of the burden and at a very minimum meet their already stated obligations". Everyone has agreed to substantially up their commitment. The United States, far the biggest economy, spent 3.6 percent past year, while Germany, the second biggest, paid out just 1.2 percent and only a handful of countries met the 2 percent target.

Why are there only 5 out of 29 countries that have met their commitment?

"At some point, they're going to call us and say, 'Let's make a deal, '" Trump said of the Iranian government.

"It is up to President Trump to hold Putin accountable for his actions during the meeting in Helsinki", McCain said.

"Putin is not America's friend, nor merely a competitor", McCain said. European diplomats are feeling exhausted and disrespected after the Trump tornado came to town, but at least he hasn't pulled USA troops out of Germany.

Demonstrators protest next to the specially erected fence surrounding the US ambassador's residence, Winfield House, where President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are staying in London on July 12.

"Germany just started paying Russian Federation, the country they want protection from, Billions of Dollars for their Energy needs coming out of a new pipeline from Russian Federation. Not acceptable! All NATO Nations must meet their 2% commitment, and that must ultimately go to 4%!"

Trump has said next week's meeting with Putin "may be the easiest" part of his European tour.

"Because of me they've raised about $40 billion over the a year ago. I don't know that is what they voted for".

Trump singled out Germany on Wednesday when he accused them of being "totally" controlled by Russian Federation because Russia provides a large share of their oil and natural gas.

Including that commitment, however, Canada's current defence spending plans are only expected to bring it to 1.4 per cent of GDP, well short of the Wales target.

The President's remarks sent officials scrambling for answers, triggered ripples of dismay among defense officials and alarmed members of Trump's own party enough that one anxious aloud the President is trying to "tear down" the 29-member alliance.

Trump's declaration that he - and he alone - secured a pact with the other 29 member states for all to increase their North Atlantic Treaty Organisation contributions came after an emergency session among the leaders on Thursday morning on that topic.

Notably, former President Barack Obama and his first defense secretary, Robert Gates, also pushed member countries to spend more.

Since 2015, the country has also had a populist right-wing government that supports many of Trump's positions, including his opposition to migration.

"They're here as a prime minister or as a president, and they can't necessarily go in and say, 'This is what we're going to do.' But they're going back for approvals", Trump said, acknowledging the political realities. And the United States is being treated much more fairly.

Alliances and friendships are being sorely tested at the meeting of world leaders. And one of the freedoms we have is freedom of speech and the freedom to express your views. "He generally dislikes the Alliance and Allied solidarity, the very principle of an alliance and mulitlareral frameworks", she said.
