Vettel wins British Grand Prix as Hamilton recovers to 2nd

British Grand Prix: Unhappy Lewis Hamilton points fin.. 'interesting tactics' after finishing second in race

The spell is broken. But if Carlsberg did second places...

It was not the opening lap of dreams the 140,000 devotees packed into the old airfield had come to see.

Hamilton's hopes of finishing on the Silverstone podium, let alone claiming a record sixth victory, appeared over after he was spun into the run-off area by Raikkonen and dropped to 18th place.

Polesitter Hamilton bogged down at the start, dropping him to third and putting him under pressure from Raikkonen on the approach to the Village complex. Speaking after the race, Raikkonen admitted he "deserved" the penalty.

Raikkonen then locked up, sliding into Hamilton and pitching the Mercedes into a spin. From there he followed the leading vehicle of Sebastian Vettel, unable to catch the German and remaining behind him after the first round of pit stops. A furious finale to match the frantic first lap looked certain when Ericsson then crashed at Turn One.

"I'm not the stewards, I can only think they have felt it was a little more serious than what Sebastian did in France", said Whiting. And get it down he did.

In both cases, the penalty did not seem sufficient to satisfy Mercedes, or their drivers, after their races were wrecked by rivals' mistakes.

The Sauber driver emerged unscathed, but the safety auto was sent out. Mercedes did not bring him in for fresh rubber, unlike Vettel and Raikkonen.

"Dead last to P2, that's an awesome effort", Mercedes told Hamilton.

Hamilton was not convinced.

"So, I say without the crash he would have won the race".

"It's easy for you to sit and watch the race".

"I would struggle to be that precise to take somebody out".

We would have to wait for the safety auto retreat seven laps later for the numbers to add up.

Vettel, however, who now leads Hamilton by eight points in the title standings, vehemently denied any foul play.

Williams had another hard qualifying session after showing early Friday promise, as both cars failed to progress from Q1 once again.

The race was neutralised again moments later for an accident at Copse between Carlos Sainz Jr and Romain Grosjean, when Sainz attacked on the outside but Grosjean suffered a wobble at the apex.

Hamilton had referred to "interesting tactics" immediately after the race, in which Raikkonen hit the back of his vehicle and spun him round on the first lap.

Lapping well around the 5.891-kilometre course, Hamilton soon moved into the points and was 25 seconds off Vettel by lap 9, with the German 5 seconds ahead of Bottas at the front. In F1 folklore as written by former McLaren leader Ron Dennis, second was always first of the losers.

Vettel, who leads Hamilton by one point going into the 10th of 21 races, had been fastest in the second practice on the Silverstone track on Friday, while Hamilton topped the first.

But while the Englishman could not give the home crowd a result to follow the national football team's success in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, he praised their support and said it would continue to spur him on throughout the rest of the season.
