Woman faces attempted murder charge in elderly man's brick beating

Aurelia Rodriguez right helps her father Rodolfo Rodriguez 92 center with witness Misbel Borjas as he walks back home after talking to members of the media gathered outside his home in Los Angeles Wednesday

Rodolfo Rodriguez was out for a walk when he was beaten the night of July 4 on a sidewalk in a tough South Los Angeles neighborhood known as Willowbrook.

The elderly Hispanic man who was bashed with a brick by a woman who reportedly told him "go back to your country" doesn't resent his attacker, according to a report.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies arrested Laquisha Jones, 30, on Tuesday evening for her role in the beatdown, which left Rodriguez with broken ribs, a battered face and bruises all over his body.

Jones was convicted of making criminal threats in 2017, according to the DA's office. Woman arrested in brutal brick beating of 92-year-old man in Willowbrook The felony complaint includes special allegations that Jones personally used a deadly and unsafe weapon, a brick, during the commission of the crime and that she committed great bodily injury upon the victim, the DA's office said in a statement. She faces a maximum sentence of 29 years in prison if convicted as charged, prosecutors said. The video and a photo that Borjas says shows the attacker drew widespread attention in the news media and on social media in the days following.

Investigators initially reported that four men may have been involved in the incident, but they are working to determine if more people were present during the attack. Investigators said so far that has not been substantiated.

Borjas, who said she witnessed the attack, said Rodriguez did nothing to provoke it, though she said Jones claimed he had bumped into her daughter.

Jones then repeatedly hit Rodriguez's face with a brick, police said.

"I'll leave it to the law", he said in Spanish.

He told reporters that he doesn't know why he was attacked and is grateful for the outpouring of community support and well wishes he's received.

A GoFundMe, with a goal of $15,000, was set up to pay for his medical treatment on July 6 and had raised $305,790 by Thursday. Rodriguez, who is a legal resident of the United States, travels back and forth between Mexico and the U.S. He was visiting family members in Willowbrook when the attack occurred. He has since been released from the hospital and is now recovering.
