Chase Utley's 16-year baseball career is nearing an end.

A person with knowledge of the situation said Friday the six-time All-Star will retire from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the end of this season. Utley plans to play out the rest of this season, but he will not return in 2019, which would be the second year of a two-year, $2 million contract. He achieved the bulk of his success with the Philadelphia Phillies, making five All-Star teams and winning four Silver Slugger awards between 2006 and 2010.

In a career decimated by injuries, Utley hit 259 home runs, 409 doubles, drove in 1,025 runs, and hit.276. He is renowned for his base-stealing ability, with 153 steals in 175 attempts. Utley has provided a veteran's perspective and been influential in the clubhouse with the Dodgers' young roster. He will become the third member of the 2008 Phillies World Series team to announce his retirement this year, joining Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth. Utley is hitting.231 with one home run this season.

The faithful in Philadelphia, where he played for 12-plus seasons, will have another chance to see Utley in action when the Dodgers play in Philadelphia July 23-25. Born in nearby Pasadena, Utley played at Long Beach Poly High and UCLA.
