Chelsea sack Conte as Sarri move inches closer

Gonzalo Higuain

Chelsea have parted ways with manager Antonio Conte after two seasons at Stamford Bridge and are expected to appoint Maurizio Sarri as his successor.

The Italian had two contrasting campaigns at the helm and has now vacated his post.

Chelsea FC finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a spot in the Champions League.

It is a surprise that it has taken so long for any news to break on Chelsea's new manager.

Sarri is the man who Chelsea have turned to, and they will hope he can bring the same style of football he played at Napoli, and with it, a return to Champions League football.

The Blues did win silverware in consecutive seasons under Antonio Conte following a 1-0 FA Cup final win against Manchester United at Wembley.

Jorginho, one of Sarri's former players at Napoli, will also join Chelsea after spurning Manchester City.

He added the FA Cup to the Premier League title he won in his first year in charge, but there was a feeling Chelsea and Conte could not go on together with neither side prepared to change their philosophies. He was eventually replaced by Carlo Ancelotti on May 23 after speculation that Sarri's buyout clause would be activated by another club.

Jorginho is unlikely to be the only new arrival at Stamford Bridge and another of Sarri's former players at Napoli has been linked: Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Others perhaps had even more obvious reasons to fall out with the manager even if it was never clear whether they actually did, in particular David Luiz, whom he exiled from the team at the beginning of last season.

They reportedly include Brazil-born Italy worldwide midfielder Jorginho from Napoli, CSKA Moscow's Russian playmaker Aleksandr Golovin and Italian defender Daniele Rugani from Juventus, the side that edged Napoli in the Serie A title race.
