Mosquitos in Jefferson County test positive for West Nile Virus

Officials have conducted weekly tests throughout the city since June, and some of the mosquitoes that have been collected and tested for West Nile virus have tested positive, according to a news release from the city.

North Witchduck Road in the Kempsville area. The Tippecanoe County Health Department received a phone call from the Indiana State Department of Health on July 12 notifying them that the virus had been detected in two mosquito groups found in Tippecanoe County on June 28, 2018. When mosquitoes test positive, the program increases its prevention efforts during daytime and evening hours in the area where the trap is located.

"Taking just a few minutes to walk around your yard or property can help reduce the mosquito population", said Matt Sinsko, coordinator of Mosquito Control at the Marion County Public Health Department.

No human cases of West Nile virus infection have been confirmed in DeKalb County.

Reduce outdoor exposure at dawn and dusk, when the mosquitoes that transmit West Nile virus are most active.

The elderly are more at risk of getting sick because their immune system is often weaker.

Wear long, loose and light colored clothing.

Use insect repellent products registered with the EPA. No more than 50 percent DEET for adults and less than 30 percent DEET for children. Follow all label instructions.

Make sure window and door screens fit tightly to keep out mosquitoes.
