Selena Gomez: Woman charged with hacking actress’ email account

New Jersey woman charged with hacking Selena Gomez's email

A New Jersey college student could spend almost a decade behind bars for allegedly hacking Selena Gomez's email. An arraignment is expected on or before August 27.

Susan Atrach is accused of accessing Gomez' accounts several times from June 2015 to February 2016 and obtaining images and other media stored there, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office said in a written statement.

Susan Atrach, 21, of New Jersey has been charged with five felony counts of identity theft; five counts of fraudulently accessing and using computer data to commit fraud or to control or obtain money, property or data; and one felony count of stealing data without permission.

"She is going to surrender here in LA", on or before that date, in order to avoid a potentially protracted extradition process, a spokesman for the DA's office told The Post.

Gomez has also been celebrated as the "queen of Instagram" with more than 138 million followers on the social media site as of Friday. The specific accounts she gained access to were a Yahoo and iCloud handle Selena shared with her assistant. If convicted on all eleven felony charges she now faces, Atrach would be required to complete a 9 years prison sentence, barring any special clauses.

Atrach compromised the account by resetting Gomez's passwords using information questions, sources with knowledge of the investigation told The Los Angeles Times. The pictures were reportedly taken back in 2015 during the Canadian's singers' trip to Bora Bora.
