Indian police arrest 25 in latest WhatsApp rumour-led lynching

The victim was identified as Mohd Azam 32 who is married and has a two-year-old son

The police took into custody 34 members of the mob. The two men are accused of spreading fake WhatsApp messages to people in Murki via the Murki Mothers Group. The attack happened on Friday. By the time we arrived, the four men were bleeding heavily.

The man who died was 30-year-old Google software engineer Mohammed Azam Ahmed of Malakpet, and those injured include Qatari national Salham Eidal Kubaisi and Noor Mohammed and Mohammed Salman from Barkas in Hyderabad, Indian Express reported. "Since they requested to be sent back to Hyderabad, an ambulance was arranged and they were taken back last night to a hospital in the city", the police said. Some of the villagers chased them on motorcycles, said the police. They were shifted to Hyderabad on Saturday. Mr Afroz had accompanied them for some distance. But the children refused to take them as they saw it had a different type of wrapper.

"Salaam had brought chocolates from Qatar and offered them to some children who were coming out of the school". This raised the suspicion of tanda residents who tried to assault them and chased the vehicle. Another reason for the suspicion was that the brand new auto had no registration number.

Though the police reached the spot on receiving information, they were outnumbered, and a couple of police constables were reportedly injured in the melee. The trio, turning panicky, boarded their vehicle and sped away.

"As the residents saw the men speed away in their vehicle, they called their friends from the adjacent village, Murki, and informed them that child abductors were escaping on the main road in a red-coloured auto".

Among the 32 arrested for the killing, one is the administrator of the WhatsApp group. In a few minutes, some villagers blocked the road with a fallen tree and boulders.

Seeing this, the friends panicked and tried to crash through the blockade. A policeman can also be seen pleading with the mob to not hurt the men. Residents of Thoul hamlet, who had been following them, joined forces with Murki villagers and started hammering the trio black & blue with sticks & stones.

IGP S. Murugan and SP D. Devaraja were camping in the village. Mr Murugan appealed to people not to believe social media rumours.

A case was registered in Kamal Nagar police station.
