May says Trump told her to sue the European Union over Brexit

May said on Sunday that Trump had advised her earlier to sue the EU. "Interestingly, what the president also said ... was, 'Don't walk away, don't walk away from negotiations, because then you are stuck, ' " May said.

May warned her party rebels on Sunday that wrecking her plan to forge a close relationship with the European Union post Britain's exit from the bloc could be disastrous. "She wanted to go a different route", he said.

The comments shocked many in Britain - even May's opponents - and couldn't have come at a worse time for May, who is facing a crisis over Brexit from within her own ranks.

"This is a good deal for the UK".

"I said (to Theresa May), "Make sure you have a carve out, you have to have a carve out" where no matter what happens they have the right to make a deal with the United States", Trump said in the interview. "We have been discussing this option". The clock is ticking.

However, she insisted that she had yet to see a "workable alternative" to the proposals - agreed by her Cabinet at Chequers - that would ensure trade remained as "frictionless" as possible while avoiding the return of a hard border in Northern Ireland.

Mrs May said she had come forward with her revised approach after the European Union offered two options for a deal - neither of which was acceptable to the UK. "The chance to become a credible trading partner will be compromised and we will be unable to strike free-trade deals". Both of those are unacceptable.

Labour MP Ian Murray, a member of the People's Vote campaign, said the British people needed a vote on the final deal. "I would actually say that she probably went the opposite way".

"Oh I think we're going to have a great trade deal, I've really no doubt about it", Trump said in the interview.

"Unfortunately, there was a story that was done which was generally fine but it didn't put in what I said about the Prime Minister and I said a tremendous thing", he said.

In a press conference after their talks Friday, Mr Trump said it had been a suggestion rather than advice.

He alleged a white paper drawn up by former Brexit Secretary Mr Davis's department had been in vain.

"No department was cut out of these discussions". More anti-Trump protests are taking place Saturday in other parts of Scotland, including one with some 10,000 people in Edinburgh.

Asked if now was the moment for Johnson to lead the country, Bannon, who was sacked by the White House in August 2017, said: "I believe moments come". Michel Barnier had made it clear to him the unnegotiability of the position that we had, so we had a choice. He refused to be drawn further, apart from saying she had "found it too brutal".

Mrs May denied that the plan would prevent Britain striking free trade deals around the world.
