On eve of Russian Federation summit, Trump calls European Union 'a foe'

As USA Today notes, the interview touched on some of today's most hot-button issues, including the US Supreme Court's potential to revisit Roe vs. Wade, Trump's meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, and child separation at the southern border.

"Whoever says we are foes is spreading fake news", Tusk, who is also a former Polish prime minister, wrote on Twitter. "But it's possible we won't".

Trump is due to meet with Putin in Helsinki for a summit on Monday.

The meeting comes just days after 12 Russian intelligence officers were charged by a US federal grand jury for hacking the Democrats ahead of the 2016 election.

"President Trump is the leader of a great country".

"As far as wiretapping, I guess, by - you know - [the Obama] administration, at least we have something in common, perhaps", Trump said in March during a press conference with Merkel. But that doesn't mean they're bad. When asked about who he sees as the U.S.'s biggest foe, he said that the US has "a lot of foes".

A trade war between China and the USA escalated last week after China imposed retaliatory tariffs on $34 billion of mostly United States agricultural products. "I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade", Trump said on CBS's "Face the Nation". "Now you wouldn't think of the European Union but they're a foe".

Trump also listed Russian Federation as a "foe in certain respects" and China as "a foe economically".

In response, European Union leader Donald Tusk tweeted: "America and the European Union are best friends".

"I can't tell you what's going to happen, but I can tell you what I'll be asking for. My father was Germany", Trump said.

May appeared perplexed when revealing what she said Trump's advice was, and laughed when the BBC anchor asked her if she had given the idea any thought.

Trump added that Russian and China are foes as well but in certain respects. Don't walk away from the negotiations, because then you're stuck.

Mr Trump said the USA has "a lot of foes" and named the bloc as one of them.
