Volkswagen I.D. R Sets Electric Record On Goodwood Hillclimb

Arguably one of the wildest cars ever made to carry Ford's Blue Oval, the RS200 is no stranger to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. R Pikes Peak is a machine that's absolutely a force to reckon with and with Romain Dumas behind its wheels, there's no stopping it.

In doing so, Dumas beat the previous record electric vehicle time, set in 2013, by 3.48 seconds. In a sign of the times, it was an electric auto in second place, too - the remarkable NIO EP9 with Peter Dumbreck driving, which had briefly held the zero-emission record itself with a 44.45sec time on Saturday (followed by a 44.32 on Sunday).

We've all come to understand that the Volkswagen I.D.

Third in the rankings was the first petrol-powered offering, a BMW E36 M3 (46.43 seconds) that eschewed the original's straight-six for a Le Mans-derived 3.5-litre Judd V8. R and Dumas repeated the feat in the final shootout, managing a 43.86 secs run to make it the first electric auto to win the event outright.

If Dumas wants to set an outright record, he'll have to beat the incredible time of 41.6 seconds set by Nick Heidfeld in a McLaren MP4/13 Formula 1 vehicle back in 1999.

Is there truly any replacement for displacement?
