Amazon's Prime Day Launch Experienced Some Technical Problems

Inc.'s sales rose sharply during the first three hours of its Prime Day sales event, dispelling fears that the technical glitches that incensed shoppers would significantly hurt business. Amazon said it was trying to fix the problem.

WHOLE FOODS IN THE MIX: The Seattle-based company is offering Prime members who spend $10 at Whole Foods from July 11-17 a $10 Amazon credit to use on Prime Day. Any product that enjoys a Prime Day discount will return to its normal price beyond this time. Nearly all such titles forgot to mention they get a cut of everything a reader buys if they click on the links in the story.

Even Amazon Prime's video service spent the day stuttering. Of course, this also works with Alexa devices like the Echo. In the end Amazon was forced to issue an apology for the day's cockups.

On Tuesday, thousands of staff at warehouses in Germany will walk out to demand better conditions, joining those taking action in Spain and Poland.

"The message is clear - while the online giant gets rich, it is saving money on the health of its workers", said Stefanie Nutzenberger, Verdi's top official responsible for the retail sector. But Amazon isn't the only place where people can find discounts. Amazon's stock had slid about 1.5 percent in extended trading in NY.

Shoppers clicking on many Prime Day links after the 3 p.m. ET Monday launch in the USA got only images of dogs - some quite abashed-looking - with the words, "Uh-oh".

Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud-computing division, reported global problems with its AWS Management Console, one of its tools. It's a particular embarrassment for Amazon, on the shopping holiday it created that has become one of its busiest days.

Amazon and its billionaire founder, Jeff Bezos, have a long history of thwarting unionization efforts in the United States.

Bezos's personal net worth now tops US$150bn.
