'Batwoman' TV Series In Development At The CW

Batwoman’ — featuring a lesbian superhero ‘with a passion for social justice’ — may become TV show

In what reads like a logline for the new series, THR describes her as "an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence". But don't call her a hero yet. Kane is a wealthy heiress who becomes inspired by Batman and chooses to also put her wealth and resources towards a campaign to fight crime as a masked vigilante in her home of Gotham City.

Batwoman could soon be coming to the "Arrow"-verse". If Batwoman goes to pilot, the same actress will play the central character in it. Dries does not work on a CW DC series but is expected to be involved in some consulting capacity when the character of Batwoman is crafted for the crossover, which spans Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl.

Vampire Diaries writer/producer Caroline Dries is locked in as a writer and producer on the project, along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns.

Batwoman is now set to appear in the Arrowverse this fall, but it looks as though The CW has bigger plans for the popular DC character going forward. If the pilot is picked up, the series could air in 2019. Dries has also been tapped as an executive producer.

Batwoman, the first openly gay DC superhero, would also add to the CW's recent track record of inclusion on its airwaves. Once this happens, there will be two depictions of Gotham on two different networks, the other being Fox's Batman prequel series, Gotham.

Should the show get picked up-which seems more than likely-it would be Berlanti's seventh show on The CW and 15th on the air overall, thus further cementing his record for most live-action shows on the air at one time.

The character was first introduced in Detective Comics in 1956 and was reimagined for DC Comics' New 52 as a Jewish lesbian, the first lesbian superhero for a title DC character.
