Defence minister resigns as crucial Brexit vote clears Commons

Guto Bebb a Remainer voted against the Government over Brexit effectively quitting his frontbench role

May's vulnerability in parliament, where she lost her Conservative Party's majority in an ill-judged election past year, was laid bare on Monday, when her decision to accept demands of pro-Brexit lawmakers stirred a rebellion among those who want to keep the closest possible ties in the EU.

Another Conservative Party legislator, Anna Soubry, who opposes the "hard" Brexit that would see Britain leave the European Union without a trade deal in place, said the government's acceptance of the four amendments mean that Rees-Mogg is now effectively "running Britain".

"If we don't, we risk ending up with no Brexit at all", she wrote in an article in the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

Noting the deep divisions in government and parliament on the way forward, Greening said the decision must be put to voters - becoming the most senior member of May's Conservative party to back the idea. "Brexit is coming home to roost".

Asked if Labour would back May's Brexit blueprint, the main opposition party's deputy leader Tom Watson told Sky News television: "We've not decided our voting position on the legislation that would enable it, but in its current form it's not good enough". Until this month, she managed this by avoiding taking a side.

For May, it was a least-worst option, aimed not so much as satisfying anyone but at giving something to everyone. But pro-Brexit Conservative lawmakers were outraged.

"Parliament is now stalemated on a way forward on Brexit, if it's the prime minister's deal it will be voted down, if it's a proposal for no deal that will be voted down, all parliament can do is block a route forward".

According to her, there are three options - May's deal, staying in the European Union or a clean break from Europe with no deal.

And the gloomy forecast of the furious Government minister I bumped into as he arrived to vote on the trade bill - that this Tory split will bring down the Government - will probably be proved to have been accurate as well.

After the turmoil of the past 24 hours, it's hard to see how the Prime Minister can salvage the deal.

Nicholas Soames and Nick Boles were among Conservative MPs who also indicated on social media that they would oppose the move to finish early.

Any vote on moving the break would take place on Wednesday.

Tuesday will see more votes on her Brexit plans, this time on her Trade Bill.

Among the potential flashpoints are anti-government amendments created to keep the United Kingdom inside a formal customs union with the EU.

Conservative former Cabinet minister Ken Clarke told MPs that the Government's adoption of ERG amendments was "directly inconsistent with the white paper of a week ago".

The new UK Brexit secretary Dominic Raab will meet the EU'S chief negotiator Michel Barnier on Thursday (19 July). "What they have said in those private conversations is that the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs will be worth it to regain our country's sovereignty", she said.
