Former UK Minister Calls for Second Vote on Brexit to End Stalemate

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves the BBC after appearing on the 'Andrew Marr Show', in central London Britain

Justine Greening described Theresa May's plans the "worst of both worlds", and suggested a vote between three options: the Prime Minister's Chequers plan, remaining in the European Union, or a no-deal Brexit.

However, it wasn't without drama as junior defence minister Guto Bebb resigned his post.

May denied a suggestion in parliament that her Brexit plan was dead, and her spokesman said the decision to accept those amendments were "consistent" with the white paper policy document ministers agreed earlier this month.

Theresa May came within six votes of the possible collapse of her government as MPs narrowly rejected an amendment to trade legislation that could have forced the United Kingdom to stay in the EU customs union.

Speaking to the BBC's John Beattie programme, Mr Thomson said the Chequers plan "needs to change before it is acceptable to me and actually before it is acceptable to the country".

If approved, European Union sources said it is set to be circulated among national governments and published on Thursday, which will be the first day that Dominic Raab, the new Brexit Secretary, meets Michel Barnier, .

This was underlined on Monday as it first accepted a series of demands from Brexiteers who are unhappy at the proposals in the White Paper, believing it keeps the United Kingdom too closely tied to the EU.

Some MPs have tabled an amendment to the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Bill, also known as the customs bill, seeking a new customs union with the EU, which May has strongly rejected.

His colleague, Labour's Paula Sherriff, said she had "important meetings" scheduled for next week and would vote against the move.

The other Remainer rebels were Heidi Allen, Richard Benyon, Ken Clarke, Jonathan Djanogly, Dominic Grieve, Stephen Hammond, Phillip Lee, Nicky Morgan, Bob Neill, Mark Pawsey, Antoinette Sandbach, Anna Soubry and Sarah Wollaston. This seems highly unlikely.

But instead of facing them down and fuelling tensions, the government accepted their four amendments.

The hardliner amendments of several dozen MPs from the European Research Group led by Jacob Rees-Mogg, basically kill off all of May's proposals in the white paper that meant to create workable solutions for both the United Kingdom and the EU.

Applying EU tariffs to products destined for the EU is part of Mrs May's plan to avoid friction at United Kingdom borders after Brexit.

The hardline amendments also foresee the United Kingdom having a different Value-Added Tax system from the European Union, and would make any special arrangements for Northern Ireland illegal by excluding the establishment of a customs border in the Irish sea.

In the afternoon Mrs May faces a lengthy appearance before the Commons liaison committee where senior MPs of all parties will grill her on her Brexit strategy.

Will enough Tory MPs vote against the customs bill for it not to pass, throwing the government into yet more chaos?

Discussing the Prime Minister's Chequers plan for Brexit she said: "I don't think it can work".

The bill is also due to have its third reading on Monday, and it could be in jeopardy if the angry Tory Brexiters join with Labour, the SNP and the Lib Dems, who are expected to vote against it.
