Toronto Raptors Current Favorites To Land Kawhi Leonard

Leonard can become a free agent after next season, and the general consensus seems to be that he will wind up with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Raptors are now level with the San Antonio Spurs as betting favourites for where Kawhi Leonard will play in 2018-19, according to OddsShark.

Still, there's been nearly no progress on Leonard's possible destinations over the last few weeks. That means the team could be willing to wait as long as necessary, even letting the stalemate last into the upcoming season while keeping Leonard on the sidelines. The Spurs' asking price for him has been astronomical.

The Raptors' ascent up the odds charts is an intriguing one, especially because James' path to Los Angeles took a similar one among the oddsmakers.

The Clippers are freeing up cap space to be able to sign two stars to their roster, and depending on the pitch and how this offseason plays out, Leonard could opt to join the Lakers' in-house rival in 2019 if they play their cards right. By being traded to Toronto, Leonard would miss out on the LA lights this season but will have the ability to go there next year on his own.

By Thursday afternoon, the odds had changed, with the Raptors becoming even-money favorites to employ the two-time Defensive Player of the Year. When healthy, Leonard is arguably a top 5 player in the league. But his health - and his role in managing it - are red flags.

By trading for Kawhi, the Raptors would be taking a big risk on his health and the ability to keep this from being just a one-year rental. The Raptors don't have any developing players that would be considered untouchable. But perhaps Vegas is onto something. And if "everyone around the National Basketball Association expects Gregg Popovich to eventually take care of Brett Brown", then it seems like the chances of the Sixers winning the jackpot for Kawhi Leonard is more likely than not, putting them clear favorites for him.
