Uber being investigated over gender discrimination

Uber reportedly facing investigation in US over gender bias

The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has opened a formal investigation into the hiring and employment practices of Uber.

"We are continually improving as a company and have proactively made a lot of changes in the last 18 months", an Uber spokeswoman said.

Uber hired former attorney general Eric Holder to review workplace conditions after the allegations. "Information becomes public only when the EEOC files a lawsuit, which is typically a last resort". It began when a former female engineer Susan Fowler wrote a blog post in February 2017 detailing a chaotic workplace environment that OK'd sexual harassment.

Uber has had its fair share of problems over the years. Dara Khosrowshahi, who took over for Kalanick in September, has said he's remaking Uber to be a more ethical company.

In it she outlined a hostile work culture for female employees and recounted how the company's human resources department refused to punish her former manager, who had propositioned her for sex, based on his productivity. These other inquiries are focused on allegations that Uber reportedly developed illegal software, violated price transparency laws and stole self-driving vehicle technology from Waymo.

Investigators have been interviewing former and current Uber employees and seeking documents from the firm. The company also has rolled out diversity and leadership training to "thousands of employees globally". Since his arrival, Khosrowshahi has been focused on cleaning up Uber's corporate culture poisoned by a pattern of sexual harassment and other abuses that included a yearlong cover-up of a major computer break-in and the use of duplicitous software to thwart government regulators. Last week, Chief People Office Liane Hornsey stepped down ahead of a report by Reuters that she had been the subject of an investigation over how she handled racial discrimination complaints.

In June, Bozoma Saint John - the chief brand officer hired as part of Uber's turnaround effort - left after just one year. Uber's latest diversity report disclosed that women make up 38 percent of its worldwide workforce.

"I have been embarrassed to learn that at times I made comments that made people feel uncomfortable, isolated, or unwelcome". "Honest feedback given in good faith is something we need more of".

Uber has been open about its plans to go public in 2019, but before that happens the company needs to find a chief financial officer - a position that has been vacant at the ride hailing company since 2015. In both of those inquiries, the agency is looking into alleged age discrimination at the tech companies.
