Alaphilippe wins Stage 10 of Tour de France, Van Avermaet keeps lead

It could be his Sky team mate Geraint Thomas, who is the best-placed of the GC (general classification) riders after safely going through the first nine stages, including the much-feared cobbles-peppered route on Sunday, which was fatal to Porte's hopes.

However, Froome, who has won the last three Grand Tours, is happy to see how the race pans out before worrying about who will be the team's leader in the latter stages.

Movistar have three options in Alejandro Valverde, Nairo Quintana and Mikel Landa, but their conservative tactics are likely to do little to open up the race.

Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors) claimed a stirring stage win and the polka dot jersey with a ride demonstrating true grit to finish ahead of Ion Izagirre (Bahrain-Merida) and Rein Taaramae (Direct Energie).

French mountain biker Alexis Bosson stole the show of stage ten of the Tour de France on Tuesday, leaping over an entire peloton of cyclists.

"I have no words".

It happened during yesterday's Stage 10, the first in the Alps, from Annecy to Le Grand Bornand, though this time the internet seems to think the rider was on a BMX rather than a mountain bike. "Everything went through my head, all the work, my family".

However, the 2012 Tour champion suggested that dual leadership could leave the team with "a real problem on their hands" with the reduced number of riders per team at this year's race potentially leaving Froome and Thomas isolated.

The differences between the main challengers were essentially made in the team time trial in the second stage.

Despite having Sky teammates at the front of the peloton, once Froome got a wheel from teammate Jonathan Castroviejo, he was left all alone for several minutes until Wout Poels eventually dropped back to help him get back.

The first of the day, at Col de la Croix Fry, was won by Rudy Molard (Team Groupama-FDJ), with Gilbert and Van Avermaet in 5th and 6th respectively.

Up next on Stage 11 is a 108.5-kilometre (67-mile) leg from Albertville to the top of the La Rosiere summit on Wednesday. That will be followed by Stage 12's ascent of the legendary Alpe d'Huez. The incident occurred on stage 10 in the Alps, with most bikers seemingly blissfully unaware of what was going on.
