Ford recalls over 500K Fusion and Escape vehicles

Ford recalls 550K Fusions, Escapes due to possible rollaway risk

Ford has announced a recall covering almost 550,000 vehicles sold in North America.

The recall covers certain 2013 through 2016 Fusion sedans and some 2013 and 2014 Escape small SUVs.

The automaker says some 2013-16 Ford Fusions and 2013-14 Ford Escapes could roll away because the bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may detach. If the bushing detaches, it can allow the vehicle's gear lever to be moved to "Park" while actually being in another gear.

A mis-reading gear indicator would also not sound a chime or display a warning message, so the problem could come as a complete surprise to the car's driver. If the parking brake is not applied, a degraded shifter cable bushing that detaches from the transmission could result in unintended vehicle movement, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Ford is not aware of any accidents at this time.

The recall involves approximately 37,000 vehicles in Canada.
