Thai cave boys speak of 'miracle' rescue after leaving hospital

It was a miracle: Thai cave boys describe two-week ordeal

Twelve Thai boys and their football coach have been discharged from hospital, a week after a daring rescue operation saw them extracted from a cave where they had been stuck for more than two weeks. But a rainy season downpour flooded the tunnels, trapping them.

"I took the flashlight from him and went down right away", Adul said.

"I know my mom is going to punish me and I am in big trouble with my mother", one of the boys said when asked what he expected to happen when he got home.

One of the boys said he was "shocked" when one of the divers who came to rescue them was British. "I had to pick up a Japanese reporter from the airport at 2 a.m.", said tour operator Manop Netsuwan.

Earlier on the televised show numerous boys said that they would not set foot inside the cave again. "I tried not to think about food because it would make me hungry", said Chanin Vibulrungruang.

"We found that there was water coming down and down from the rocks", said Ekapol.

"Bringing the Wild Boars Home", read a banner in Thai on the set, created to resemble a soccer field, complete with goalposts and nets, where the boys arrayed themselves on a dais, beside five members of the rescue team.

All 12 players and their coach had been under close supervision at Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital, near the border with Myanmar, since they were rescued from the cave on July 10.

To help pass the time, the group said they played checkers together.

In the video, one boy said: "Everyone was anxious about us and I'm speechless". They asked how are you? But the moment was bittersweet, as two of the boys held up a framed pencil sketch of Samarn Kunan, 38, the former Thai navy diver who died while he worked underwater, laying oxygen tanks along a potential exit route out of the cave complex. "Then he said, 'Brilliant'".

The rescue effort drew global media attention and hundreds of journalists, many of whom left after it wrapped up, but excitement picked up again in the usually sleepy town of Chiang Rai ahead of the boys' much-anticipated appearance. The hospital officials said that the survivors can go back and lead a normal life now while a psychologist asserted that "the boys were quite obedient during therapy".

"All cried and expressed their condolences by writing messages on a drawing of Lieutenant Commander Saman and observed one minute of silence for him", said Jedsada Chokdamrongsuk, permanent secretary at the health ministry.

"They chose to go out voluntary".

The "Wild Boars" team members looked healthy and happy as they answered questions about the nine days they spent in the dark before being discovered by members of an worldwide rescue team.

The coach added that he asked the boys if they wanted to explore and told them they would have to swim.

Dr Pak said that when the boys were first delivered food in the cave, they found it so delicious that some of them "snuck food out in wetsuits".

Earlier this week it was reported that doctors had told the families of the boys to avoid contact with media for "at least a month" after they are discharged to avoid adding additional trauma to the youngsters.
