And, unsurprisingly, Apple's App Store accounted for a pretty big chunk of the total. This is almost double the estimated $20.1 billion (roughly Rs. 137,000 crores) spent on Google Play.

App Store users spent $22.6 billion (roughly Rs. 154,000 crores) in the first half, which was almost 90 percent higher or 1.9 times more than the user spending of $11.8 billion (roughly Rs. 80,706 crores) on Google Play during the first half, estimates Sensor Tower. Last quarter the App Store exceeded Play Store gross spending by 85%. For the latter, overall engagement time and consumer spending are also up-likely in no small part due to the World Cup-with some markets seeing a 65% rise in sports app use compared to the three weeks before the event.

India and Indonesia were two big drivers for growth on the Play Store, which is understandable given the increased attention Google has been paying to those markets. For comparison, previous year the App Store earned $38.5 billion in revenue while Google Play $20.1 billion. The first-time app installs globally reached around 51 billion, growing 11.3 percent over the first half of 2017.

Chinese company Tencent has titles in the top three of both global spending and total downloads. It comes as no surprise that consumer spending is still higher in the App Store marketplace.

Sensor Tower's report shows that mobile game spending has grown year-over-year to $26.6B in H1 2018. This represents almost 78 percent of the total spent on apps across both app stores. Thankfully, plenty of new arrivals are reaching the top games lists in both paid and free categories for the first time, indicating that there is still scope for new apps to grow. In any case, it seems that the App Store earned nearly twice its competitor with less than half of the total downloads.

App downloads on both stores are also up.
