Cuban authorities open access to the mobile Internet

While Cuba permits access only to 3G, meaning subscribers will not get fast speeds that can be used for 4G/LTE. As Reuters notes, until 2013, you could only get online by visiting certain hotels that had connectivity for its global guests.

Communist-run Cuba has started providing internet on the mobile phones of select users as it aims to roll out the service nationwide by year-end, in a further step toward opening one of the Western Hemisphere's least connected countries.

Journalists, of state-run news outlets, were the first ones to receive the service, which is being provided by Cuba's telecoms monopoly - Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba SA (ETECSA).

Reuters says that Cuba's current Soviet-era constitution only recognises state, cooperative, farmer, personal and joint venture property, but former President Raul Castro's market reforms, "aimed at trying to boost the economy and make Cuban socialism more sustainable, have prompted hundreds of thousands of Cubans to join the ranks of the island's self-employed since 2010, in new privately owned businesses ranging from restaurants to beauty salons". Presidents will continue to serve five-year terms, with a two-term maximum. Though, exact reason for this remains unknown to people, the effect on the country's economy is pretty obvious.

"We need to be able to put the content of the revolution online", Díaz-Canel said while still vice president in July, claiming that Cubans could "counter the avalanche of pseudo-cultural, banal and vulgar content".

Cuba's telecoms monopoly website ETECSA has, however, ruled out the possibility of achieving that feat by 2020. ETECSA President Mayra Arevich told state-run media in December it had connected just 11,000 homes previous year. Yet he was denied the connection as the service providers weren't "ready" and will call him as soon as they are ready.

However, the price could prove as one of the major limitations for many. Some people managed to connect to the Internet for their homes, but even now many customers who are willing to pay for this privilege, please wait.
