Ex-FBI chief Comey urges voters to support Democrats in fall

Former FBI Director James Comey, a longtime Republican who has clashed with President Donald Trump over the federal Russian Federation probe, urged Americans to vote for Democrats in November congressional elections.

Comey, until recently a Republican, argued on Twitter on Tuesday night that the GOP, which controls both chambers of Congress, has failed to provide an adequate check on Trump. "Policy differences don't matter right now".

"This was the day an American president stood on foreign soil next to a murderous lying thug and refused to back his own country", Comey wrote afterward. "History has its eyes on us".

Comey earlier tweeted about Trump's remarks at the summit, urging patriots to "stand up and reject the behaviour of this president".

Mr Comey, who was sacked from his job as Federal Bureau of Investigation director by Donald Trump a year ago, recently said he no longer considers himself a Republican. Despite admitting to it in an interview shortly after he ousted Comey that the "Russia thing" prompted his decision to fire Comey, Trump has since denied that rationale.

At a summit in Helsinki with the Russian president, Trump said, "I have President Putin; he just said it's not Russia".

On Monday, after the United States president's press conference with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, Mr Comey tweeted: "This was the day an American president stood on foreign soil next to a murderous lying thug and refused to back his own country". Comey himself later said he was "mildly nauseous" at the idea that he influenced the outcome of the election.

Analysis by FiveThirtyEight found that Comey's letter probably did cost Clinton the election, saying it probably shifted as much as three or four percentage points over to Trump.
