Marina Gross: Some Want Trump's Interpreter Subpoenaed

Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday pushed for Congress to subpoena Donald Trump's interpreter, amid a growing sense of alarm over the private summit in Helsinki between the U.S. president and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

If the two men reached any understandings during their private meeting that they did not reveal in public, Gross - a taxpayer funded employee who like all federal civil servants takes an oath to protect the Constitution - would know about it.

At their first bilateral summit, the two leaders met privately for two hours in the Finnish capital Helsinki on Monday with only their interpreters present.

Her name wasn't found in a State Department phone book.

"With Trump are Fiona Hill, who is on the National Security Council; Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; translator Marina Gross, who has previously translated for the State Department and other government entities; US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman; and national security adviser John Bolton". TMZ also reported that Gross "served as a translator for then Secretary of State Rex Tillerson back in April 2017 in Moscow".

While the summit was held behind closed doors the two leaders gave a news conference afterwards at which Mr Trump shocked many by defending Russian Federation over the allegations of election interference.

Senators Richard Blumenthal and Jeanne Shaheen have also called for the interpreter, identified as Marina Gross, to testify, as have congressmen Joe Kennedy and Bill Pascrell in the House of Representatives. "We want to see the notes".

The blowback for Helsinki was so fierce that Trump issued a uniquely rare walk-back, saying he meant to use a double negative and indicate Russian Federation would be responsible for the election hacking.

Two Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday called for Gross to be interviewed before Congress in relation to the Trump-Putin meeting in Helsinki.

"I write to urge you to request a hearing with the American translator to testify publicly before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on the details of Trump's one-on-one meeting with Putin in Helsinki, Finland on July 16, 2018", Pascrell wrote the committee leaders.

After Mr. Trump said Monday in Helsinki that he doubted the US intelligence community's assessment of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and said the USA interferes too, Democrats on social media and some current and former officials have accused Mr. Trump of treason and stated as fact that he's a compromised agent of the Kremlin. "Serving as a translator, it has been reported that Ms. Marina Gross was the only other American in the room and so the sole reliable witness to the conversation between the two world leaders".

"We need public testimony by the only American present at this meeting to ensure Trump did not further undermine our intelligence or law enforcement communities", he said.
