MP declares no confidence in Theresa May over European Union withdrawal plans

PAAnna Soubry and Justine Greening are two of the most outspoken Remainers

The latest squabbling over Brexit has renewed speculation about a possible leadership challenge for May, who has had a particularly rough few weeks with high-profile resignations, knife-edge votes in the House of Commons, and criticism of her Brexit plans from both those who want to remain in the European Union and those who want to leave.

He condemned the prime minister's decision to move away from a Brexit vision presented in January a year ago at Lancaster House and towards the Chequers agreement reached earlier this month, which would see the United Kingdom pursue a softer form of Brexit and remain closely aligned with some European Union rules.

"We burned through negotiating capital".

'I always have to look you all in the eye and tell you that I have done what I believe is right for the country and our Party.

He added that it is "Not too late to save Brexit, ' and added, 'We must try to save Brexit because we will not get another chance".

Earlier, the Prime Minister was put on the spot by one of her MPs, who asked when it was she decided that "Brexit means Remain".

"It would also be harder to get the medicines we need when we need them - this is particularly worrying for time-critical drugs and equipment", he said, giving the example of the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017, when some of the trauma treatments used for victims were initially stocked in Amsterdam.

Johnson paid tribute to Theresa May for "her courage and her resilience". Britons should be "great independent actors" on the world stage, not "rule takers", he said. "Not the democratic disaster of ongoing harmonization with no way out and no say for the UK".

Other Brexiteers also appeared to rallying around Mrs May, despite this week's ever-deepening splits between Tory Leavers and Remainers, with one describing a "warm response" for the prime minister as she addressed the meeting on Wednesday evening.

He insisted it was "not too late to save Brexit".

Yet, Mr Hammond and the Remainers stood firm and pushed the amendment to a division, with the House of Commons vote accompanied by reports of "awful" threats and "extreme verbal bullying" by Tory whips.

He told the Prime Minister not to "make the fatal mistake of underestimating the intelligence of the public, saying one thing to the European Union about what we are really doing and pretending another to the electorate".

"On "no deal", we have always said that that isn't something we want or hope for, and the progress of talks so far suggests that is not where we will end up", the spokeswoman told reporters.

May was giving evidence to a parliamentary committee so was not in the chamber to hear Johnson's speech.

But the former foreign secretary was mocked by pro-EU MPs.

The original Chequers agreement caused the resignations of Davis and Johnson.

While some Remainers, led by former cabinet Minister Justine Greening, have demanded a second referendum saying No10 is incapable of breaking the deadlock which is threatening to tear the Tory party apart.

There are a raft of petitions online calling for the resignation of May, and public calls of no-confidence, both over her politics and Brexit.
