Stone goes agonisingly close to 59 as Pepperell & Dantorp also make Open

Stone reacts as his putt for the first 59 on the European Tour rolls by the hole

And for the 19th time, they missed.

Stone started his final round at Gullane three shots off the lead but covered the front nine in 31 and collected birdies on the 10th, 12th, 14th and 15th holes before sinking a curling eagle putt from 30 feet on the par-five 16th to give himself a chance of making golf history.

Cape Town - South Africa's Brandon Stone has won the European Tour's Scottish Open and booked his spot in this week's Open Championship.

"Very happy, I played decent over the first few rounds and didn't get much going with my energy levels down from last week which is understandable, but I got a good night's sleep which helped", said Fox.

"My caddie came up to me on the 18th and said you don't get putts like this too often so I let him read it".

The former US Open victor from Portrush was aiming for one of three spots available for non-exempt players to secure a top-10 finish.

Eddie Pepperell will join him at The Open as he took second, finishing four shots off the pace after a closing 64, while overnight leader Jens Dantorp secured the final qualification place.

The victory was hardly in doubt, however, despite a day of low scoring which saw every player in the field - bar one - finish the 72 holes in red figures.

"I rolled it over his mark, but he did criticise my pace, he said it lacked a little bit of pace".

England's Robert Rock, who led overnight on 13-under, made four bogeys and a triple-bogey in a disgusting seven-hole stretch around the turn to drop out of contention and finish the day on seven-under after a 76.

Cameron Smith (T42) and Adam Bland (66th) were the other Australians to make the cut.

It left the 38-year-old needing to earn one of the three qualifying places on offer at both the Irish Open and Scottish Open.

Sweden's Jens Dantorp claimed the other, his higher world ranking seeing him beat out 2008 Masters victor Trevor Immelman who posted his best tournament finish since a T10 at Torrey Pines in 2014.
